OPM retirement processing rate hits new year’s low

The Office of Personnel Management received and processed more retirement claims than expected in May, but at its slowest rate in a year.

The Office of Personnel Management received and processed more retirement claims than expected in May, but at its slowest rate in a year.

While only expecting to receive 7,100 claims this month, OPM received 7,845 claims. It exceeded its own expectations, however, by processing 10,697 claims when it had projected only 9,100 would be completed.

The agency’s inventory, which went from 18,226 claims in April, fell to 15,374 claims in May. That decrease, however, still falls short of OPM’s goal of decreasing the backlog to 12,042 claims.

This month, OPM processed 68 percent of its claims in 60 days or less, the lowest rate reported since May 2014.
